I had travelled with fellow bloggers & photographers on a road trip to Palampur (Himachal Pradesh) from Delhi some time back on invite from Himachal Heritage Village. While our experience of Palampur was pleasant, the drive from delhi to palampur and back was a nightmare. It was because of a bad driver mostly, but also due to some mistakes we made while understanding the directions on google map. So I am sharing my guide on DelhJi to Palampur road trip by self driving or hired car.
The distance from Delhi to Palampur (Himachal Pradesh) is around 489 kms and takes around 10 hours (considering 2-3 pit stops ).
From Delhi, one has to take the GT Road towards Murthal (NH 9) and it passes through Ambala and Chandigarh (NH 44) . While driving on NH 44 after Chandigarh, one has to be careful, especially drving at night, as the road is being widened and adequate signs have not been put up; we had a scare on this stretch as the driver drove into a pile of rubble and car tyres burst! Continue on NH 503 till Mehatpur.
The NH 503 starts from Mehatpur and passes through Una. Now one has to be careful at Una as there is alternate route with a cut to right which goes via NH 303 (we took this route and our journey became longer by 4 hours!). Please continue on NH 503 and it will take another 2.5 to 3 hours till Palampur main town.
I hope this driving guide is helpful to fellow passengers and you have a safe road trip from delhi to Palampur.
